A few words about our trips...

Thank yous & Summarys!
Peak District (TRAINING) 9th - 11th March '07

Big thank you to everyone who made this trip as successful as it was. Laura planned the routes very well and it was nice to see everyone getting stuck in to the big treks up the valley. Lizzie had some amazing grub on offer too which even satisfied the Fell members who tagged along. Big cheer for Matt after a weekend of 12hours driving, and everyone else who contributed in any form whilst staying in the out, sliding down boggy hills and trying out their acting skills across the moors.

Peak District (FAKE PRACTICE) 19th - 22nd March '07

What a trip!? Not only did we arrive at the first campsite in style we also ended up hiking up mountains in gale force winds and lots of heavy snow. Probably one of the worst scenarios who would ever face on a DofE expedition, so a big pat on the back for those who made it through such a violent day. Day two was more promising for the few that went on to trek again up hills and look across the incredible Derbyshire scenery; you really did deserve that pub grub that evening. Final day all exhausted but we made it and the long journey home gave everyone time to reflect on the rewarding experience with the odd cheesy tune blasting out in the minibus.

Lake District (EXPEDITION REAL PRACTICE) 21st - 25th June '07

A big big thank you to everyone who made the Gold Practice Expedition in the Lake District such a success. That includes Laura for all the paperwork and the little bits we don't give her credit for, our fantastic minibus drivers who seemed entertained by the wreckage they caused to the vehicle heading up Hardknott Pass (Big cheer for Colin & Sam), a massive thanks to Helen Hanley who helped supervise the expedition with all her expertise & big spirit and finally the two Alex's for sorting out the loose ends and pickles at the last minute.

As for our hikers, you deserve many congratulations on completing such a challenging venture. Everyone had their ups and downs, but the whole team pulled through and fully achieved their goals. Check out all the photos on Ali, Sam & Sannah's facebook profiles.

We did have a lot of humour, irritation, pain & crazy moments over the 4 days. Some of which included wrong sized walking boots, Sannah's suicidal rockslide, raids of midges, degree results, secret rucksacks, 150 feet waterfalls & cliff edges and our very own animal linguists.

I hope you've all learnt a lot from the hike & are all preparing for the real thing in August (I know you guys can do it hands down). Once again a huge congratulations to Maddy, Serena, Ali, Sannah & Alex for making the trip happen. I very much look forward to the Dales later this year :-P

Yorkshire Dales (EXPEDITION REAL ASSESSMENT) 12th - 18th August '07

After a tough year for this year's Gold participants, a congratulations is in hand for Ali Cripps, Maddy Giles, Sannah Malik, Hayley Whitfield, Serena Broughton & Alex Nye for their successful venture through the Yorkshire Dales National Park. After the 4 days, 3 nights expedition and 92km of strenuous hill-walking the crazy 6 finally acheived the toughest part of the challenge and all deserve a pat on the back for their efforts.

A big thank you also goes out to our wonderful drivers and helpers, without them this trip would not have run so smoothly. So Laura Edwards, Colin McDermott, Chris Moore & Helen Hanley all deserve a big round of applause.

I hope to see many faces at this years DofE Icebreaker & Reunion Party. All help is much appreciated and all I have left to see is good luck to the people leaving us and LONG LIVE POO SHEEP!

Thetford Forest (NAVIGATION TRAINING) 4th May '08

The day trip took 4 gold award participants and 1 bronze participant on a 12km walk through the depths of Thetford Forest. After kicking off with a group of little ducks leading the way, the expedition crew got to grips with their navigation skills and impressed staff members with a very efficient hike. A stop for ice cream was obviously essential, although on the real expeditions this won't be possible.

A big thank you to Sarah Gibbard, Helen Jacques, Fay Parsons-Hann, Jola Dara and Rosie Earwaker for making the trip possible, and I have complete faith all of you in getting your gold/bronze awards this year.
